23:03

In my article about our return to The Dog & Badger, I mentioned that our previous visits had been very successful, apart from the one that coincided with the cricketers. I was therefore not too pleased to find that our return visit was a home cricket  fixture, so the bar was packed and loud. Indeed, I think it was once again the venue for the annual shouting contest, which might have been preceded by some cricket.

We carried on regardless. As far as I could hear, most of us switched to the less subtle end of our repertoires.

As Fred posted the lyrics to a new song the next day, I can only assume it to have been 'inspired' by the evening. Reproduced here with assumed permission (thanks Fred):

Ambient noise

Chorus:
Please keep up the chatter at the back!
Please keep up the chatter at the back;
A little bit of background noise
Helps us sustain our equipoise:
So please keep up the chatter at the back!

Classical musicians call for silence
They insist on it when tuning up their violins
But Folk musicians have no fear
We'd rather that you didn't hear,
So please keep up the chatter at the back!

Chorus

Sometimes our voices get a bit unsteady
And everybody always knows the words already
Sometimes the singer gets it wrong:
Embarrassment can kill a song
So please keep up the chatter at the back!

Chorus

Penny whistles are a damned infernal nuisance
You're better off ignoring their insouciance
And when accordians start to play
Just raise your voice until you bray
And please keep up the chatter at the back!

Chorus

If you listen to the words you'll get our measure
We are playing for the misery not the pleasure;
If we think it's got too quiet
We'll have a fight and start a riot,
So please keep up the chatter at the back!

Chorus

I've talked to Nick the landlord and have agreed a schedule that avoids have us and the cricketers on the same evening. We'll be back at the D&B on 8th June, but not there at all in July.
